KAHLO’S MANY LOVES

Although I am an abstract expressionist painter, I do an eclectic love for other movements as well.

One artist that has been a constant love of mine is Frida Kahlo. With her works you can tell she puts her heart and soul into each piece, and they all exude an emotive aura.

I painted this triptych after watching the Judy Taymor film “Frida” with Selma Hayek for the umpteenth time, and kept Kahlo in mind the entire time I was painting the piece.

What I found surprising was, when I was finished, all three pieces have a flow to them that, visually, you would have thought I painted them next to each other on one easel. I painted all of them separately, and just followed my “instict” in making it.

Was it subconscious…? Guided by Frida’s hand…? All of the above? Who can say.

What I can say is that I feel this piece reflects the fiery heart that Frida had…there are many people that she loved, and many in different ways. I feel all those loves are captured here, held in the echoes of her heart in some unseen constellation.
